ICCO began its involvement with the Tianjin Social Welfare Institute over 6 years ago. This adult facility has 240 residents, all mentally and/or physically disabled, ranging from 15 to 70 years of age. Before the ICCO was involved most of the residents had nothing to occupy their time and were not very responsive.
The ICCO hired teachers and began holding classes for the residents. There was also a big need for residents with Cerebral Palsy. At that time, many of the teenagers with CP were housed with the older men and women and were not receiving therapy. With donations it was possible to renovate a portion of the building for the teenagers with a living room, bedrooms and a physical therapy room for the CP residents. As of now, the ICCO is providing 12 ayis, 3 physical therapists, 7 teachers, and curriculum for the facility as well as helping with therapy equipment and medical treatments.
